A Message From Kathy's Husband, Len

Kathy and MeWith deep, personal anguish I must tell you that my beloved Kathy was brutally beaten, raped, and murdered on the night of the final racing events of the February Hobie Catamaran Regatta in San Felipe, Mexico. Her screams were heard, and events were partially witnessed, but tragically, nothing was done to help her. Death was due to asphyxia from strangulation. Ironically and shockingly, the killer, Luis Enrique Gallegos Avila, was the security guard on duty for the El Cortez Hotel.

One of the last photos of Kathy just hours before the murder and rapeEveryone should learn from this horrible experience. Remember that Mexico is a developing country. There is no U.S. Constitution, no Bill of Rights, and no U.S. standards of protection and liability. Mexican law limits restitution for wrongful death to about $20,000. Unfortunately, violent crime and police corruption are becoming more widespread in Mexico.

San Felipe, Baja California, MexicoMy thoughts that apply to both men and women are the following: Always be aware that you are at increased risk for violent crime when on vacation. The surroundings are less familiar, and your guard is often relaxed in a seemingly peaceful setting. Avoid being out at night. Move about in small groups, and never be alone. Do not trust a "security guard." Stay familiar with some basic self-defense skills. Consult violent-crimes prevention groups and the U.S. State Department travel advisories.

Do something when you hear screams for help!

  • Begin screaming yourself! Be persistent!
  • Tell someone immediately! Tell police!
Especially if you're with a friend, maybe you can see what's wrong and help save someone's life. It's wrong to stand by silently when someone is being brutally abused.

Protect yourself and your loved ones. Seemingly unnecessary precautions are far better than the too late, painful, and tragic "if only_"

Please do not patronize the El Cortez Hotel. Remember Kathy's departed soul and her loved ones that struggle without her.

Sincerely, Len
